Does A Great JobNeil Shapiro
This does almost everything that I had hoped with only a few cons, not enough to lose a complete star. Basically, the setup went very easily. Although I have a wireless network I purchased a network extender that had an ethernet port and simply plugged it in behind the rx-v477 and ran the cable. It instantly found my network without a problem. Hooking up the HDMI -- blue ray, cable box, ps3, xbox360, roku, apptv and output to a new Samsung 3D HDTV was as simple a process as typing it was. I also had an old laserdisc and an older VCR and both of those hooked up to the composite inputs without problem. So with eight devices hooked up I began to explore the receiver's capabilities. The sound fields are very nice and give a believable sound. The Dolby movie modes are particularly crisp as compared to an older receiver I upgraded from with almost a visible surround field if you close your eyes. The hall modes with echo effects seemed as good as any I have heard but are just not for me. However, I did find that the Jazz Hall effect did improve the sound of various music selections. At any point a press of the "straight" button returns you to immediate listening to the sound as the external device presented it to the amp. And if you are real, real, real picky the "direct" button turns the sound straight but also cuts off all other electronics but those related to the sound field itself which the directions say results in a purer sound. I have yet to discern a difference but maybe if your ears are younger than 60+ years you will be awed. Good receiver overallRaja Bhat
I'm just using it to play it on an overhead speaker system. So I can't say how it would sound on regular speakers. But using the overhead speakers the sound is very clear and nice. Got it because I wanted some Internet radio functions and Pandora and such. Spotify is also a function on it but I don't plan to pay for that service. I just decided to pay $5 a month for Pandora One. I got a WiFi YWA-10 adapter to connect to our Internet. Sound is clear, sharp...no concerns there. I really had to use the Yamaha app to find good Internet radio stations. Indeed without that app I'd likely have returned the unit. I had to borrow a small monitor with HDMI input just to set up Pandora. Once I got the password entered, which was tedious on a very primitive keyboard, I could play the music using my Galaxy S4 Yamaha app very easily. I can turn the receiver off using the app but could not turn it on..had to do it manually. So now I have FM radio, Internet radio, and the music on my S4, all 16 GB of it, but do miss HD radio as we have an excellent HD station in our town. But I guess only very expensive receivers have HD radio. And many HD stations are online. Overall I'm pleased and have no regrets. The WiFi adapter seems to work reliably so far. Though this morning it had conked out and I had to re-power it and got it working. I'll write back if it keeps disconnecting from our WiFi system.Overall no regrets, but bear in mind....WITHOUT A MONITOR YOU CANNOT SET UP PANDORA. These companies need to know that many of us don't connect the receiver to a TV/Monitor, just use it for sound. There needs to be a better way to enter a Pandora or Spotify password without a monitor.

Only had this receiver for one week now. This receiver has awesome sound and setup is pretty simple. It has an easy on screen minue and wifi was simple to setup. I like the fack that you can set the max volume and change the way the volume is displayed on the tv screen. It has plenty of power to drive high quality speakers. This receiver has as good a sound quality as some recevers cousting twice as much. It also has a pretty decent app for your phone or pad. Iwould buy this receiver again.
Yamaha RX-V477=High value with lots of bells and whistlesGromicide
I give the Yamaha 477 receiver 5 stars not because it's the end all be all or holy grail or home theater AVR's. For that, you'll have to dig much deeper into your pocket. I give it 5 stars because so far (had it for one week) it does everything it claims to and does it well. For an entry level AVR at this price, it offers adequate power, 6 HDMI outlets, an ethernet port, air play, the ability to at stream from multiple devices (you can even wake it up from an external device and start playing music without getting up). YPAO will calibrate the audio if you desire. I could take off a star as so far I'm on the fence about YPAO and whether I like it. You can always revert back to original settings or tweak the YPAO settings to your liking. This is my first Yamaha AVR and I was shopping this along with comparable products from Denon, Pioneer etc...I might have gone with the Denon but I have no regrets with the Yamaha. Let's hope it lives up the reputation of Yamaha reliability.I listen to a lot of music but so far have only listened to a few select tracks (FLAC files and mp3 320 kbps). Watched Need for Speed last night with the family and surround sound effects were great. I'm hooked up to a 5.1 using Pioneer AJ fronts and center with sub and surrounds left from my older Onkyo HTIB.You can't go wrong with this receiver. If it's on your short list and you're wanting a good AVR in the $350 price range, you should be plenty pleased with this choice.
