3 out of 5 stars TECHCRAFT TCL6228 Veneto A/V Credenza - Looks like furniture
ccmango

This unit is an interesting approximation of real furniture, but it's not real furniture. At the price it will certainly serve many quite well, but there are things to understand about it before buying. The first thing to know is that it is made in China for TechCraft (Canadian) from mainly particle board parts that are laminated with a thin layer of photorealistic "walnut" plastic print. There are some real wood parts--primarily the top and legs--that are soft pine or poplar edge-laminated boards. These are not walnut but are stained medium dark reddish brown to sort of match the particle board (shelves, partitions and back). Oddly, the "walnut" printed parts look more like real wood than the real wood parts at a distance! If you think you are going to evaluate this product and possibly return it if you don't like it--forget it. The delivery service will drop it off at your house in the Chinese cardboard carton that disintegrates on opening in a cloud of dust. Open the carton very gently and carefully.Next, it's supposed to be an A/V cabinet, but there are no holes in the vertical partitions to communicate one bay to the next for wires. If you think you will need to do this, I advise drilling the holes with a hole saw in these particle board partitions before assembling the cabinet. Stay at least an inch away from the corners when drilling because the metal cinch connectors are there inside the board. Likewise, if you don't like the position of the holes in the back (masonite/pressboard) you'll probably want to drill or saw those holes before assembly. The assembly is pretty easy but coaxing the parts together with a rubber mallet will make it easier. The connector design is quite clever and when assembled the cabinet is pretty sturdy--and heavy.Read more ›

5 out of 5 stars looks great, sturdy, very easy to assemble

The unit arrived in perfect condition and looks better than in the pictures. Assembly took maybe 10 minutes and I am normally inept at that sort of thing. The pieces fit together like Lego and lock in place with little levers. One of the best executed approaches to tool-free assembly I have come across. The unit has some nice touches such as vents in the shelves to dissipate heat. The larger openings in the back provide plenty of room for routing cables.

I originally considered wall-mounting my new 58" flat panel TV, but decided to buy this item and have been REALLY impressed with both the quality and appearance of the credenza. Solid construction, easy to assemble, lots of space

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful item... except for the damaged parts

The product arrived in a box that looked pretty beat up with a lot of torn spots that had been taped over with packing tape. I feared the worst. As I removed the pieces, everything looked okay... except for 3 nicked spots on the top piece. There were 2 at the very back and one in the middle. Fortunately, the one in the middle is covered by the TV's stand. The 2 on the back are visible if you stand on either side of the stand. I used a furniture marker to darken the spots, so you have to get close to notice. I'm disappointed that the item was not packaged and handled better. It should not have arrived damaged and is a beautiful piece of furniture otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Great product for the money

Bought this product for my A/V setup and am very happy with it. It was one of the few credenzas that had cabinet space large enough to handle my audio equipment.Pros:- Assembled very quickly. Just as they promise - no tools needed.- You don't need to assemble the cabinet doors! This is always one of the parts of such assembly that I dread.- Looks better than it does in the picture - yes it's mostly particle board covered by veneer, but it looks like a nice piece of furniture.- It's very sturdy, and has a nice amount of space underneath.- Ventilation slots on the shelves... very nice touch.- Cabinets are wider/taller than most credenzas.Cons:- The veneer is thin - I nicked one small part with my DVR, and I didn't hit it very hard. It still went through the veneer to the wood. Thankfully the top seems to be solid wood, which will get most of the abuse. The unit came packed pretty well, but there was minor damage on one of the seperators and one of the shelves - that damage appears to have been done at the factory, because it was 'repaired' - colored over with stain. The damage was very slight, though, and once assembled wasn't noticeable at all (wasn't on any exterior pieces).- Yes assembly is easy, but you need two people for it. The front panel is all one piece and has to line up exactly with the 2 end pieces and the 2 cabinet separator pieces. The top requires two people to line everything up also.- Slots in the back are narrow. An inch or two wider would have been better. You have to make sure you do most of your wiring before you put the components in. Still, I was able to work my hand into a slot to wire up my audio equipment.- The doors on the front cabinet get in the way when putting in wider components. I had to seriously tilt my stuff to get them into those cabinets.Overall, this is a great purchase. It's easy to assemble, sturdy, and looks really nice.

5 out of 5 stars Great piece for a slot-peg assembly media center.

The appearance of the unit was better than expected. Yes the piece is an 'Ikea' assembly but the fit/finish was better than expected. The front and back is each single piece (yes the doors are already assembled). Basically, you lay the rear down and slide in the sides into peg/slot fashion. Then I put the fron piece in and stood it on its legs and used the palm to 'bang' pieces into full position. You sort of have to position the cams that lock on the top prior to placing the top on the unit. This was a little slide and push but it really only took me a 5-10 minutes once all the pieces were removed form the box.The sides have a framed finish if you set it up so you can see them (tower speakers on the sides) The top looks fantastic. I only had one problem with a bottom platform and wrote to TechCraft. They promptly sent out a replacement board with no cost/shipping. The emails were answered quikly, conveyed the problem and shipped out in less than two days confirming everyhting. Shipping was ground so adding to the two days was not an issue. I didn't expect a company to overnight something like that. The credenza is a great value, the company stands behind their product and I would buy another if I needed it without hesitation.
