I remember back in the 1980's, Sony TVs were the thing to get. Those Trinitron CRT sets just seemed to have a brighter, crisper picture than anyone else out there. They suffered a little bit in the last few years as their competitors closed the gap of price and quality. This new series of 4K TVs may be just the thing Sony needs to remind everyone that they're still one of the best out there.I had a couple things on my list: 4K, 3D, a decent-looking design, a set that wouldn't be obsolete in a year, and a set that was relatively affordable. Here's how the set did.4K:The first time I walked into a Best Buy and saw a TV with a 4K picture, my jaw dropped. Seeing 4K for the first time reminded me of the time I saw 1080i for the first time in a Tokyo airport. The picture improvement is that much clearer and crisper. Sure enough, the 4K rendering on this set is terrific--color fidelity is spot-on and the picture is bright.Of course, 4K is really only good for early adopters and technophiles right now, as there isn't much 4K content out there and likely won't be for years. Cable companies aren't going to support it until there's a critical mass (heck, most are still broadcasting at 720p). The only other ways outside of the TV to get 4K content is through a PC (you'll need an upgraded video card) or a media server, which will cost extra. That said, I was able to connect directly to NetFlix through the TV. There's a handful of 4K programs available, which as of this writing includes movies like Ghostbusters, Philadelphia, and Smurfs 2; TV shows like Breaking Bad and House of Cards; and a couple of mediocre nature films. I loaded up House of Cards and I was blown away; it was surreal, more like watching a home movie of Kevin Spacey than a TV show.Read more ›

I just bought this TV a few days ago, and since receiving it and using it, I can honestly say I love it. It is my favorite TV of the many I've owned, a spot previously held by a Philips 1080p with Ambilight which, while dated, was reliable and beautiful. But this new XBR takes the cake. That said, I do have three small complaints, two of which could be fixed with software/firmware updates (hint, hint if anyone at Sony engineering is reading this). I'll start with the good, and move to the complaints.THE GOOD:The Picture - This is probably the most important thing to most TV purchasers, and I can tell you that this TV does not disappoint. The color is beautiful, which is apparently to be expected based on professional reviews of past years of the XBR line. The colors are bright, motion is smooth, blacks are deep, and I have yet to see an artifact that isn't the result of Internet streaming. The 4K is very impressive. There isn't a ton of 4K content out there, but from what I have been able to watch on this unit (a few Netflix shows), this TV handles 4K wonderfully. I don't know that the 4K picture is necessarily better than competing units from Samsung or LG (after all, they all are the same resolution), but the 4K on this unit is top of the line. Combine that with the beautiful color, even lighting (even though it's side lit), and great contrast, and you have what I think is one of the best 4K pictures on the market. The upscaling works pretty well, but it's still upscaling, so don't expect upscaled 4K pictures to look like native 4K pictures. For backgrounds and normal surfaces, it works very well, but for fine detail, you can't fill in what isn't there in the initial data stream - the TV can't put hairs on someone's head, for example.Read more ›

My wood home entertainment center is nine feet long. I had to get a TV to fit the center cabinet. It was interesting that the new Sony 55" (diagonal) set was 3" larger then my old 52" set but the length and width was smaller because the screen went to 3/8" from the edge. There were two 3D 4K Sony 55" sets on sale. One had rear speakers and the other had side speakers. The one with side speakers would not fit in my cabinet and I thought it looked odd, just too wide. Also the speakers were not covered. I don't like looking at speaker cones. But the one with rear speakers had poorer sound. What to do?What I like about amazon.com is that they have honest customer reviews. Reading them I found the solution. What most customers did was to buy a Sony Soundbar. The TV has two support legs at the ends and the Soundbar sits cleanly in the middle. This was another feature I liked because my old TV had a center mount which made the cabinet wood deck sag.But what really sold me is that the Soundbar comes with a wireless mini sub-woofer. And it only cost $349. Much better than the side speaker model for $1000 more that had no sub-woofer. And because the Soundbar is a Sony brand, it will sync to the TV so when you turn the TV on and off, the Soundbar turns on and off. So I got the rear speaker Sony TV. Setup was easy and I had a lot of surprises.Surprise #1When I first turned on the Soundbar there was no sound from the sub-woofer. I then read in its manual that there is a separate volume control on its remote called "SW Volume". It came from the factory at the minimum setting. I adjusted it and it worked great. With the Soundbar there was a huge difference having the woofer. Much more realistic sound then the TV's rear speakers.Read more ›
