4 out of 5 stars Lets See What Happens Next

Review for:Samsung UN40H5500 Slim 40-inch 1080p 60Hz Smart LED TV.Abstract:I bought this TV shortly after it was available on Amazon. The smart features are excellent. However, I had a variety of problems with two TVs before I purchased a third which was flawless. I have been updating my review here to share what has been going on with the TVs and the returns.Pros:Excellent CPU. Previous model had a dual core, this one has a quad core, which means the smart features are faster. The features are excellent. It is true that you can watch Netflix, Amazon videos, browse the internet, and so much more. All smart features work well, except some times that the Youtube app is laggy and prone to crashes (I don't blame the TV on this, but it is more of the app version which is different from one you would see on a smart phone). I do like some features of the Youtube app which allow me to create playlists on my smart phone and watch them on the TV. The Netflix app was recently upgraded and it works even better now, if you like Netflix or Amazon videos, specially if you have Amazon prime, you need one of these TVs. The network card, the hardware component that allows you to connect to your home's wireless network, is perfect. You can connect to 2g or 5g WLAN. Storage on the TV is good, but really you should use an external Hard Drive for home movies and pictures you wish to stream or if you can connect it to your home PC and stream from there. This TV is essentially a computer, so you can always plug in a mouse and keyboard and browse the net. The Smart TV features are excellent, I recommend it.Cons:I had to buy three TVs before I received one that was working as intended.Read more ›

4 out of 5 stars Great tv for the price

Display: The display is beautifully vibrant, nothing new from Samsung. Almost perfectly calibrated out of the box in my opinion. Motion is handled pretty well for only 60hz, but I'm no refresh rate guru so feel free to check a more professional review ;)Sound: This tv's sound is louder and clearer than any other tv in my house. The speakers deliver plenty of volume, enough to easily fill a large bedroom without distortion. What really surprised me was the existence of a low end. Unlike tvs I've had in the past, this one has decent bass for music listening and gaming. For a tv this thin, the sound is hard to beat.Smarts: This is a hit of miss for me. The smart tv interface is simple. The quad core processor still leaves speed to be desired. Netflix takes about 8-10 secs to boot. There are plenty of apps to download, though most are throw aways. The web browser is decent, although cumbersome to navigate. Unfortunately, navigating most of the smart interface is slow thanks to the "simple" remote included. Trying to search for a movie or a website is a pain. My suggestion is to get a good wireless usb keyboard if you really want to speed things up. Wifi speeds are decent (using Comcast 50mbps) but my Chromecast still seems faster for streaming. The screen mirroring is by far my favorite feature. Works well with all my android devices and my Windows 8 laptop. Update: Youtube app lags and crashes (I blame the poor app not Samsung). DLNA streaming works well too.Xtras: The ir blaster works great with my Comcast box, requiring one less remote on my nightstand. HDMI-CEC (Anynet+) works perfectly with my Chromecast, PS3, PS4. You can turn a device on, or have the devices turn the tv on, switch inputs automatically, etc.Read more ›

3 out of 5 stars Great picture, BAD web browser, great bargain, HORRIBLE tech support
Ray

Picture- Samsung great for a 60 Hz TV; Web Browser- MANY freezes and crashes due to limited memory (1 Gb); Appearance- Outstanding for an entry level HDTV (.3" bezels give the look of a much higher end set): Price- Amazon great ($478 !!!). I must add one very important observation made through MANY hours of personal experience- Samsung tech support and customer service are by far the WORST I have ever dealt with, among the dozens of companies I have direct experience with. All aspects of these often critical departments are WOEFULLY lacking, so if you are a novice end user who may not be very technologically adept, consider purchasing an LG product instead. The LG picture is almost as good, the value is comparable, and the support staff (based on my limited interaction) is far superior to Samsung.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful TV -- Usage Tips, and Several Limitations
R and P

We actually purchased this tv somewhere else. It's a really good set, with an easy set-up, and a nice clean picture. That said, it has several limitations, which convince us it's not worth 5 stars. Here are some tips that might make your viewing experience a bit easier.- As others have mentioned, there is no need to use the artificial-looking "Dynamic", under Picture Mode. We choose "Standard", but you will see what you like.- It might also help to toy with the Advance Settings under Picture mode. If you are sitting down to watch a movie, it's worth it to fine tune things. Each show varies in it's broadcast quality, so you might have to toy with the settings, at various times. These visual differences existed with the traditional tube TVs, but it's more noticeable now, because the modern visuals are so much clearer.- It's good to remember that although this set is 1080p capable, this is assuming you are watching a telecast which actually presents it's programming in that format. A moderate number of current shows televise in 720p, and some of the older movies broadcast in 420p. Your local news programs and many contemporary movies will give you the capability of using the 1080p to it's greatest benefit. We are not talking about any adjustments you need to make, but we are speaking of the limitations of the individual broadcast itself.- When using head phones, the volume remains stationery. It cannot be adjusted, even when using a capable (volume-adjusting) headset. You cannot use Mute with the headphones. This is frustrating. Maybe more importantly, the overall audio quality of this tv is lacking, and not too much above average. This tv (and maybe nearly all modern TV sets) practically require you to purchase outside sound equipment.Read more ›
