A real Upgrade 15 Years Laterdnd24
Ok I hardly ever write reviews but I thought about this quite a bit and read a lot before making this purchase so I thought I'd do my best to help others. I was one of the earliest adopters of the whole home cinema projector idea. I inherited what was at the time a $5000 state of the art Epson machine in 1999. We bought it for our dot com start-up. Afterwards I took it home and bought a screen. I figured out how to connect it to my cable and surround sound and it has worked great for nearly 15 years. recently it just died - I think it was the fan blades. So it was time to upgrade. I was all excited to find out I could replace it for as little as $400-$500 bucks. But then I found out there was a big divide between office powerpoint projectors and home cinema. When I originaly bought mine there was no difference. The guy at Office Depot told me that if I wanted it for movies that I'd be better off going to Best buy. I went to Best Buy and they only had like three choices in Home Cinema. I had rapidly figured out that in order to get true HD - i.e.. 1080 P the cost was like $1500 on up - ugh! I didn't want to spend that much. So I went on a crusade to find a 1080 P HD projector for under $1000 so I naturally went to Amazon. I read all kinds of reviews and went to sites like [...] which was very helpful. I finally narrowed it down to four all found on Amazon and studied at Projector Central:Optoma HD25 $949BenQ W1070 $884Mitsubishi HC 4000 $949Acer H6510BD $740These were all very highly rated. Good:1. Image quality2. Design3. Loud speaker. (I know we all have good audio system but the loud speaker on the projector allows you to take the projector with you to other location and still have sound)4. Works in Eu since it accepts up to 240 volt input.Bad:1. Very short zoom range. You have to check you room size before you buy it. There is a very good Epson projection calculator.2. No lens shift at all. So you have to put it smack in the middle of the screen. You can digitally move the projected image but you lose a lot of detail.3. Very loud fan. On normal image you can't hear a normal talk scene. On Eco mode you can hear what the characters speak but you also hear the fan.4. Wireless is not build in. It is Wireless ready but you have to buy a Wireless stick from Epson.5. Missing trigger port for the drop down electric screen.6. The image is a little out of focus in the corners. But this is not a big thing. During a movie you will not notice that. you have to stare at the screen from 20 inches away in order to see it.Other: I would like to have a Ethernet connection on it and a plex client.Final:If you can place the projector in the middle of the room and if you are a little deaf then the image quality will amaze you. I only use it in Eco mode as to save lamp life and to hear the dialogs ;) I am projecting at a 122 inch screen from 13 feet away.

If you want to watch movies, sports or video games in a full screen environment, with excellent picture quality, you'll be happy with this projector. It's full HD 1080, you can even watch 3D movies on it. It has a built in speaker as well. The color and focus were excellent.I tried it connected to a PS3 for both gaming and movies, a Roku, a laptop and even my iPod (using the TV connection cables). All were excellent quality and I found it easy to set up and use. I even set up a photo slide show using a USB flash drive. You'll need a large wall, or screen for best viewing and you can get up to a 300" image.A few small nits. My older Epson Projector has a case, this one does not. For the price I think a case makes sense. Mostly we'll use this at home but if you want to take it with you, you have to buy a separate case. Also it connects to smart phones with MHL but only certain models, like Samsung Galaxy. I'd love a way to connect my iPhone. Other then that, it's an excellent projector and highly recommended.

For a sub $1,000 projector, this is a great machine. I am not an expert on projectors, but I know what works. I watched Super Bowl 48 on a 7' wide grey screen with this, and the brightness, color and contrast out of the box with zero adjustments was great even with enough ambient light for my sister-in-law to sit next to me and read a book. When the room is dark, contrast is fine with ECO mode, and the machine is pretty quiet. If I want some brightness and more contrast in ambient lighting, I flip it to normal mode. The fan is noticeably louder then, but easy enough to get used to when immersed in a good movie or sporting event. The replacement bulbs are affordable compared to most others. The placement limitations to achieve true 1080P can be a bit of a bummer for some, so make sure you check Epson's website for that. I did not drop-hang it the full recommended amount to get a picture without keystone correction, but I can honestly say the picture looks 1080P to my non-expert eyes. At just over 10' minimum seating arrangement for my 7' wide screen, the projector is just about directly overhead, and it doesn't really bother me much. I played COD on XBOX with this, and it looks great. I had a little trouble in dark scenes because of contrast, but with minimal ambient light it's still playable. No noticeable lag, but then I'm not the fastest player, either. I can't comment on 3D as I never use it.If you are looking for an Average Joe's review, you found it. Contrast, color and clarity with this machine do not match up with a good HD TV, but projectors rarely do unless they cost as much as a car. For the price, you get an excellent entry level machine and every person that has come to see it in action has said "wow."
